An art therapy group for clients with chronic schizophrenia

Abstract: Describes an art therapy-Gestalt therapy group as one element of comprehensive social work treatment for clients with chronic schizophrenia. The goals of the group were to encourage clients to express their feelings and thoughts, to interact with each other, and to increase self-esteem through the manifestation of creativity. The group was open and ranged from 6 to 10 clients each week. The hourly sessions included individual work on an assigned project followed by a discussion group. The group process seemed to help clients in the areas of self-disclosure, interaction therapist modeling, awareness enhancement, self-esteem opportunities for nurturing, physical arrangements, and enhanced social functioning outside the group.
