Music and Emotion: aspects of music therapy research

Author(s): A. Gilroy, C. Lee (eds)

Journal/Book: Art and Music: Therapy and Research. 1993; London. Routledge. 51-65.

Abstract: Clinical Improvisation in music therapy is about more than playing music with a client: the musical form is usually understood by music therapists, to be of emotional significance. This 'Dynamic Form' is at the heart of the music therapy process, and its significance is neither wholly musical, nor is it wholly psychological, but it is both of these. This complicates music therapy research: if we attempt to describe and evaluate the musical phenomena of sessions, can we be confident that we are addressing the emotional component of the sessions. The chapter provides some theoretical support for possible research designs to draw a distinction between 'music' and 'music as therapy'.
