Commentary on Stresses and coping mechanisms: a report of interviews with eleven emergency department nurse managers

Journal/Book: ENA's Nursing Scan in Emergency Care. 1993; 3: 15.

Abstract: SYNOPSIS: The ED nurse manager role has expanded into an increasingly responsible, stressful position, requiring new skills. Through interviews, a focus group, and written surveys from 11 nurse managers, the researchers identified stressors as expectations expanding beyond job description, lack of finished tasks or evidence of accomplishment, staffing issues, repetitive-unresolvable problems, internal and external accountabilities/conflicts, powerlessness, and ED-environment stress (trauma and death). Strategies used for successful coping include education and management development in delegation, controlling interruptions, standing firm to convictions, ability to set and achieve goals, and organization. Activities used for coping included debriefing with a friend/spouse, networking with peers, socializing and family activities, exercise, reading, music, and ensuring sufficient rest. Success and confidence in the ED manager role came from knowing "one makes a difference" and being able to make things happen. [Original article accession number: 1993167183]
