Psychotherapy of Professional Dyskinesia: Report of Two Cases

Abstract: There are many different kinds of dyskinesia in medical practice. Some of them are neuropathological and others are due to so-called organic disorders such as osteoarthritis, myotenositis, etc. In this paper, the term Òprofessional dyskinesiaÓ is specifically applied to a dyskinesia that is psychogenically caused and job-related. It may be described as a result of stressful events acting on a predisposed personality. Since 1983, I have cured two patients who were professional musicians and suffered from professional dyskinesia. It is said that this disorder is not rare among those who are engaged in certain professional endeavours. Some patients even include those who are very accomplished in their field. Because the disorder gets in the way of their professional career, these patients suffer a great deal. It seems appropriate to report the two cases in terms of symptoms, treatment procedure, and the prognosis. In this way, the report will be meaningful to those persons who may be interested in this particular form of dyskinesia.
