Abstract: Describes the case of a 28-yr-old woman with Down's syndrome (IQ = 50), who presented at a mental psychiatric service center with anorexia nervosa (AN). Music therapy was used effectively in the management of this S in relation to her external world and control of her AN. Her progress through 5 stages is noted. The authors assert that where words fail, music may be a medium through which to explore one's inner world and experiences. Psychodynamic approaches have helped to create better understanding of what it means to be handicapped (e.g., V. Sinason, 1992).
