The use of music therapy to decrease wandering: An alternative to restraints

Journal/Book: Music Therapy Perspectives. 1993; 11: 32-36.

Abstract: Explores the effectiveness of music therapy and reading sessions in decreasing wandering in a White female Alzheimer's patient (aged 81 yrs). Due to the S's frustration with being placed in a gerichair and the possible dangers potentially encountered in her frequent wanderings, a music therapist tested singing with the S to help her remain seated. After 20 singing sessions, the therapist read to the S to compare the degree of the S's attentiveness. Reading and singing sessions were timed according to length of time the S stayed seated. Both the music therapy and reading sessions redirected the S from wandering, but the total time she sat for the music therapy sessions was double that of the reading sessions (214.3 min vs 99.1 min). It is noted that the length of time she remained seated for music therapy increased consistently, whereas the time she sat during reading was more sporadic.
