Learning about feelings: The role of supervision in art therapy training |
Journal/Book: Arts in Psychotherapy. 1993; 20: 213-222.
Abstract: Argues that supervision has a vital role to play in bringing together art therapy students' capacity for self awareness and self-reflection as well as the understanding of theory and the intellectual and practical skills vital for professional practice. In this way, supervisors help students develop a professional identity. Current supervision and training practices are discussed, and a definition of supervision is provided. The process of supervision as it applies to art therapy is analyzed. Both sides of the controversy over whether the students' training analyst should also supervise their analytic work are presented. It is concluded that, rather than thinking of the 2 helping relationships as being in conflict, or thinking of supervision as more than education but less than psychotherapy, it would be more helpful to think of them as forming a continuum.
