Keeping the dream alive: Profiles of three early twentieth century music therapists

Abstract: Discusses how during the 1st yrs of the 20th century, music therapy clinical practice was more vigorously promoted than ever before, due mostly to the efforts of 3 women music educators/therapists who flourished during this time. Eva Augusta Vescelius believed that the selection of key, rhythm, and composition was very important in helping people change unhealthy physical, mental, and spiritual conditions. Isa Maud Ilsen believed in using a variety of music along with other creative arts therapies and that a therapist's personality played an important role in the therapeutic process. Harriet Ayer Seymour belived in the use of music in conjunction with constructive thought for treatment of a variety of disorders.
