Abstract: Examined the effects of singing instruction and rhythmic instruction on the rate of speech and verbal intelligibility of neurologically impaired persons and ascertained the influence of age, premorbid musical experience, and type of neurological impairment on the S's speech production. 32 patients (aged 26+ yrs) with neurogenic communication disorders who were residents of a chronic care facility were randomly assigned to the rhythm instruction group, the singing instruction group, or the control group. After 9 wks of 2 30-min sessions/wk, the singing group made the most progress. While premorbid musical experience was not a significant factor, the treatment Ss' age range and type of neurological impairment were significant predictors of speech performance.

Note: age & premorbid musical experience & type of disorder; effect of singing vs rhythmic instruction on speech rate & verbal intelligibility; 26 76 yr olds & older with neurogenic speech disorders
