Abstract: Describes rhythmic movement and music activities used as part of a summer day camp program for adolescents with severe and profound disabilities. Of 12 Ss who participated in the camp, one had language skills, 4 Ss used wheelchairs, and 8 Ss had some form of cerebral palsy. Ss received a 45-min movement/music session a week with the movement specialist and music therapist and individual sessions 3 times a week with the music therapist. Goal areas identified were improving psychomotor performance, enhancing rhythmic skills, and encouraging speech sounds. Psychomotor goals were primarily addressed during the warm-up. A co-disciplinary approach, opening up avenues of self expression, the developmental perspective, reflective interaction, and appreciation of the inner person are considered important when working with this special population.
