Abstract: Attempts to bridge the theory and technique of psychoanalytic and music therapy by introducing ways in which resistance manifests itself in the music therapy paradigm and describes how resistance can be observed in the music and to the music. Examples of patients' resistance (e.g., consistently choosing or avoiding the use of particular instruments) are given as well as examples of how therapists can work through the resistant behavior. The resistances that can originate in the music therapist and inhibit the process are also addressed. It is concluded that in addition to the patients' resistance, music therapists need to be aware of their own resistant behaviors, including their own reluctance to play music or an over-investment in producing music.
