The music therapist as qualitative researcher |
Journal/Book: Music Therapy. 1993; 12: 16-39.
Abstract: Investigates assumptions and procedures common to both qualitative research and creative music therapy to inform creative music therapists of a research approach consonant with their clinical beliefs and methods, and to demonstrate that prominent approaches to music therapy have incorporated characteristics of qualitative research. Just as qualitative research perceives the human person as the prime means of data-gathering and analysis, in music therapy the interventionist is more important than actual techniques. Topics addressed include the equality of status between researcher and participant in qualitative research and music therapy, the importance of human relationship, the therapist's use of his or her personal history as a tool, and the use of multiple perspectives and self-reflection to ensure the integrity of work.
