Unproven methods in cancer treatment |
Journal/Book: Current Opinion in Oncology 5 (4), 646-654. 1993;
Abstract: The nature-based and nontoxic image makes application of unprovenmethods in oncology attractive in contrast to application of amechanized scientific medicine. The application frequency of thesetreatments ranges from 10% to greater than 60%. Increasingly, thepromoters try to create a scientific impression through a pseudologiccancer theory, a harmless diagnostic test, and a holistic treatment ofevery cancer. Of the big variety of unproven methods, which aresummarized in 11 groups in this review, the following are discussed:anthroposophic and other mistletoe preparations; homeopathy; MaharishiAyur-Veda; unproven anticancer diets; orthomolecular medicine, includingascorbic acid; and methods supposedly stimulating unspecific andspecific defense mechanisms. In conclusion, physicians should beware ofand have knowledge of currently used unproven cancer treatments forepidemiologic, social, economic, and scientific reasons. Author.
