Kollathsche Ernährung bei degenerativen und entzündlichen Erkrankungen des Bewegungsapparates |
Abstract: The biochemical research of the last few years has revealed the connections between nutrition and diseases. Due to the discovery of these connections we have recognized the significance of the lactovegetable diet recommended by Kollath in case of inflammatory and degenerative diseases of the locomotor system. Arachidonic acid supplied by the consumption of meat is transformed by the organism into inflammatory mediators (prostaglandins, thromboxane, prostacyclin, leukotrienes, lipoxins and hydroxyfatty acids). In the case of inflammatory arthropathy, these substances produce the pain, the inflammation and the swelling. We have examined, how the formation of inflammatory mediators can be reduced by an adequate diet. The immune effect of the raw diet observed by Kollath is possibly dependent on the increased intake of omega-3-fatty acids, which inhibit the formation of pro-inflammatory mediators. We also discuss an immunomodulating effect of the omega-3-fatty acids by a negative feed back inhibition of immunocompetent lymphocytes. The intake of milk and milk products recommended by Kollath is the most important precondition for the prevention of osteoporosis, while a supply of phosphate which is too high with animal food reduces the calciurn content of the bones. The osteoporosis which is developing, supports degenerative osseous changes. Therefore the findings made by the science of nutrition have confirmed the principles of nutrition developed by Kollath and they have shown, that this diet can be recommended with only a few modifications even in the case of inflammatory and degenerative arthropathy.
