The symptoms of poisoning found amongst the Islandic grazing sheep and cattle are due to flourine in the volcanic ash, as considered by Islandic scientific findings, either from Hecla or other volcanoes; the ashes carried by the wind and then eaten with the grass by grazing sheep and cattle make symptoms of poisoning and the knowledge of these symptoms is the only information, besides some few cases, for the use of the remedy. Due to flourine being easily diluted in water and the excessive amount of rainfall, the ash is washed out quickly.
