Abstract: The purposeful cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants is absolutely necessary for the production of phytomedicines of high quality. In the last years an increase in yield has been noticed in Germany after many years of recession in the growing of medicinal herbs. This is mainly caused by the new pharmaceutical Legislation with emphasis on quality. The cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants is not easy for the plant growers. It is very hard to predict profitability because there are many problems of cultivation and marketing while pn'ces are fluctuating. The contract cultivation of medical and aromatic plants will offer a good chances to ensure a living for single farmers with some ecological advantages. Moreover, the buyers have the chance to get raw material with high quality from homegrown crops.
