Abstract: The increasing interest in the use of fragrances and essential oils especially in aromatherapy caused a great variety of meanings about the effects of such substances. The opinions of experts an this field and of a lot of "quackersÂ”, who think of themselves to be such experts resp. let non-experts believe this, shall be pointed out clearly in this paper. The coinage of a common definition of the term "aromatherapy" as well as results of own investigations, especially the effects of fragrances and essential oils in animal experiments after inhalation, are significant parts of this article.
