Abstract: This Review surveys literature on the question of immunomodulatory effects of acupuncture. The modulation of immune system is related to structures of the nervous system and is accompanied by the release of neurotransmitters, cytocines, hormones and others. Here several points are reported al which an acupuncture exerts either immunostimulatory effects or immunosuppressing (affects. Therefore, the exact knowledge of the pathophysiological mechanisms are of great importance since an aggravation of the basic disease could be induced through acupuncture itself Correlations between the "concepts of defence" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Modern Western Medicine were introduced.
