Common Thyme and Wild Thyme (Brotherworth) - Thymus species |
Author(s):
Abstract: The thyme species Thymus vulgaris L., Thymus zygis L. and Thymus pulegioides L. are still used in modern as well as in traditional medicine. In the form of teapreparations and especially in the form of dry- and fluid-extracts these medicinal plants are used as expectorants and bronchospasmolytics, e.g. for the treatment of acute or chronic bronchitis and in general in case of catarrh of the upper respiratory tract. The use of these plants as spices, and as ingredient of the »Herbes de Provence« is a generally wellknown fact. From experimental pharmacological studies a chlinical effect of the thyme species should not be expected in general. Often in pharmaceutical preparations the concentration of thyme is rather low. Possibly 'in these cases thyme does not represent an effective medicine but an agent which ameliorates taste and smell.
