Abstract: Isokinetic and isometric force values were investigated in a group of patients with knee injuries. Despite intensive physiotherapy considerable unilateral force deficits were found 87 days (group I) and 72 days (group Il) postoperatively. Certain force parameters change according to well-defined laws. This is also true for the adaptation by training. It is also important to consider the neurophysiological fundamentals of the ability to produce forces. The common but incorrect method to consider force results as a purely muscular ability will be discussed. It is pointed out that the force training theory which is evaluated and validated mainly in young and sound patients is of only limited validity concerning clinical purposes. Therefore the authors recommend a prolongation of the postoperative therapy period, a higher training frequency than used in the study and a more knee extensor orientated training which should above all develop the vastus medialis muscle.
