Abstract: Solanum dulcamara L., the woody nightshade contains steroidal alkaloid-glycosides and steroidal saponins. Because »the old drug stipites dulcamarae« or Bittersweet stems has due to its constituents actions such as: antimicrobial, anticholinergic and antiphlogistic the monograph claims for its application: »The supportive therapy of chronical exzema«. Woody nightshade is used in allopathic and homeopathic therapy. According to the literature stipites dulcamarae is one of the strongest antidyscratic drugs with a special dermatotropical effect in skin diseases, based on disturbances of metabolism. In homeopathy the drug is used in feverish conditions, in inflammations of the respiratory, the gastrointestinal and the urinary tract, the joints and of the skin. Toxic effects are mainly caused by the fruits and result in gastrointestinal irritation and vomiting.
