Medical rehabilitation of patients with a burnt hand Part 1: Plastic surgical conditions

Abstract: The high share of hands among deep burn injuries and the social consequences for the affected person resulting thereof, makes functional re-construction of the hand to one of the most urgent tasks of burn medicine. With increasing depth of the burn shifting between conservative and plastic surgical procedure becomes more delicate. Correct action taken at the scene of accident and optimum medical attention of the deep burn victim in hospital are a prerequisite for successful rehabilitation. Special attention must be paid to burn oedem to avoid a compartment syndrome resulting from it which would present serious complication. Parallel to surgical attention all measures must be taken for contracture prophylaxis. Here already during the early stage the tasks of plastic surgery and physical medicine do overlap.
