Abstract: Objective: Determination of the acute effect of carbon dioxide containing mineral thermal baths (36'C) on venous function in patients with venous diseases and healthy persons.Subjects: 15 healthy persons and 30 patients with venous diseases in stage II according to Widmer (15 with postthrombotic syndrome, 15 with varicose veins).Design: Randomised (bathing or control period) intraindividual study with cross over. Measurements under strongly standardized conditions with light (= infrared) plethysmography and mercury- in-rubber strain gauge plethysmography. Results: The parameters of the healthy persons did not change after an immersion-period of 20 minutes compared with the control values. In both patient groups the venous function showed a marked improvement of venous capacity after the bathing compared with the preimmersion values. Conclusions: Carbon dioxide containing mineral thermal baths of 36 °C are not harmful to patients with venous diseases. Its effect in long-term management of musculo-skeletal and concomitant venous disorders should now be studied.
