Abstract: On ten consecutive days 22 patients with different retinal diseases were treated for two hours each with oxygen through a nasal tube that was successively increased up to 10 litres per minute. In the controls performed before and after the therapy resp. three to six months after the oxygen application the lasting improvement of the following parameters concerning vision and circulation could be demonstrated:1. Up to six months after the oxygen therapy a reduction in the values for haematocrit and haemoglobin was demonstrated which was mainly due to a reduction in the number of erythrocytes.2. After the therapy an increase in the difference of the arteriovenous oxygen partial pressure was measured indicating an increased utilization of the oxygen by the tissues of the body.3. In the patients included in this study a lasting improvement of the vision could be achieved by means of the oxygen therapy the extent of which varied according to the opthalmological disease.4. The angiographic investigations performed with contrast substances (fluorescence angiography) showed a significant reduction in the time for the arteriovenous passage after the oxygen therapy.
