Antimykotische Therapie mit Saccharomyces boulardii

Journal/Book: Ärztezeitschrift für Naturheilverfahren. 1993; 34/8: 657-662.

Abstract: Intestinal colonization with Candida albicans and - in its symptomatic form Candida enteritis play an important role in the provocation of acute and chronic diarrhea in children and adults as also in the framework of atopy. Primarily responsible for the development of those affections are, besides false dietary habits and personal, even disease-linked dispositions (e. g. diabetes mellitus), particularly the application of antibiotics, corticosteroids, immuno-suppressives and, finally, consuming diseases as well as intensive care measures, resulting in disturbance of the intestinal ecologic equilibrium. This leads to overgrowth of pathogenic yeasts and other pathogenic microorganisms at the expense of the physiological microflora. In contrast to that: apathogenic, living yeast cells of the type Saccharomyces boulardii are capable of preventing intestinal Candida colonization to a certain extent or even superseding those yeasts, respectively. By clinical application of Saccharomyces boulardii, either alone or as adjuvant, it is therefore possible to utilize its prophylactic and therapeutic properties against the above mentioned diseases.
