The investigation of erythema due to physical and balneotherapeutical factors (heat, galvanisation, COZ, H2S) according to the capsaicin model

Abstract: Objective: Investigation to evaluate the effective mechanisms of physically and balneotherapeutically induced skin erythema (heat, galvanisation, COZ, H2S) by the use of the capsaicin model.Subjects: Performance of the experiments an 8 healthy probands. Measurements of skin blood flow with the Laser-Doppler-Flowmetry (Periflux, Perimed, Stockholm). Desensitisation of the axon reflex by means of capsaicin.Design: Topical application of capsaicin during four days to desensitize the axon reflex. Measurements of the hyperemic reaction of CO2, HZS, heat, galvanisation before and after desensitisation.Results: Erythema induced by CO2, HZS and heat are not affected by prior treatment with capsaicin. On the other hand the erythema due to galvanisation is inhibited.Conclusions: The axon reflex is most likely a factor in the vasodilating effect of galvanisations. This involved mechanisms such as the so-called Antidromic Vasodilation with liberation of vasoactive neuropeptides.
