Abstract: In addition to the essential and non-essential nutrients plant foods contain other health-promoting compounds. These substances, called secondary plant products, occur only in minor concentrations and exert pharmacological effects. This article describes some of the health-promoting effects of these compounds including anticarcinogenic, antibiotic, antioxidant as well as immunomodulatory effects. Quantitatively, the most frequently occuring secondary plant products are polyphenols (including flavonoids) and carotenoids. A largely vegetarian diet like wholesome nutrition ensures a high intake of these health-promoting compounds.
