Neopterinbestimmung bei Kindern

Abstract: The macrophages play a principal role in the human cellular immune system and are the actual defence against the various pathogenic organisms. The mediator Neopterin activates the macrophages, especially their phagocytosis. The efficiency of this part of the immune system in acute cases can be relatively easily determined from these Neopterin values. In a study of over 200 children the average Neopterin values for each age group are calculated. In cases susceptible to infections, this value quickly shows how far the mononuclear phagocyte system is disordered.Measuring the Neopterin values is very easy for a general practioner as one milliliter of serum is enough. Exposure to light rapidly breaks down the Neopterin molecule and therefore a coloured container must be used. Measuring these values can be done by any larger laboratory.
