Group work with juvenile delinquents |
Journal/Book: Journal for Specialists in Group Work. 1992; 17: 116-126.
Abstract: Discusses how professionals in the helping services use various group treatment approaches with juvenile delinquents based on assumptions about etiology of delinquency. Group work is illustrated as providing a positive peer culture; a group problem-solving process (cognitive-behavioral treatment); knowledge and information for sexual abusers (psychoeducational treatment); cognitive restructuring (treatment of learned behavior); behavioral rehearsal of alternatives, behavioral contracting, and monetary reinforcement (action-oriented treatment); and residential treatments (mileau therapy). Parental involvement, assertiveness training, and music therapy are also discussed. Different types of delinquency (sex offenders, institutionalized vs noninstitutionalized offenders, and involved in violent delinquency) are often the focus. Problem areas include identification of group members, ethics, and common issues such as social control.
