Clinical applications of music and chemotherapy: The effects on nausea and emesis

Journal/Book: Music Therapy Perspectives. 1992; 10: 27-35.

Abstract: 15 adults (aged 38-73 yrs) undergoing 4 or more chemotherapy (CHEMO) treatments for cancer were randomly assigned to listen to music during Treatments 1-4 or during Treatments 2-5. Data were collected on degree of nausea and vomiting before, during, and after CHEMO; anxiety levels during CHEMO as observed by peripheral finger temperature; verbal interaction; movement; skin pallor; and attitudes about cancer and its treatment. Data were also collected during treatments of 2 control groups who did not listen to music. Ss and medical staff reacted favorably to the benefits of music during CHEMO. Both music groups reported less nausea than controls. The length of time before nausea onset was longer for the music groups. The greatest effects of music were the faster passing of CHEMO time and a reduction in anxiety and tension. Benefits for nausea reduction were rated the lowest.
