The Effects of Music Therapy with People who have severe learning difficulties

Abstract: The paper will discuss the benefits of music therapy with people who have severe learning difficulty and display challenging behaviour, who live in an institutionalised setting. She will also discuss the problems that can effect the therapeutic process within an institution and why music therapy in her opinion can only go so far if the institution is not willing to face some of the deeper emotional aspects of the clients needs. The role of the music therapist in helping to show the different directions to staff and management will be briefly touched on. This paper will be published by the BSMT later in l992, price on application.
