Matching, attunement and the psychoanalytic dialogue |
Journal/Book: International Journal of Psycho Analysis. 1992; 73: 39-54.
Abstract: Focuses on unformulated events in analytic sequences before the crystallization of that makes verbal interpretation possible. The author examines the use of concepts from infant research, particularly amodal perception and attunement, that may be of use to the clinical analyst. It is noted that musical time-sequence concepts, such as affect-attunement, are poorly developed in psychoanalysis. Illustration of attunements in analysis are attempted with doggerel verses about patients. It is suggested that a progressive movement or dialectic between the preverbal affect-attunement level and formalized interpretation may be optimal in analytic therapy.
