Abstract: In the article the author presents three different reachers understanding of the phenomenon of autism. She discusses, which consequences different ways of understanding autism have for the possibilities in music therapy, and for the understanding of the music therapist/autustic client relationship. Music therapy with autistic clients is totally different if you - as a music therapist / identitfy yourself as an object for transference or not. The author places herself in between the three researchers by bringing in different ways of understanding normal infant ability of relating to objects in the first month of the infants life. This understanding of the early morher/infant contact she transfers into the understanding of a music therapist/autistic client relationship. Along the way she discusses the function and the role of music.
