Ethnomusic Therapy; an Interdisciplinary Approach to Music and Healing

Abstract: The presentation will demonstrate how the disciplines of music therapy, medicine and ethnomusicology can function in a interdisciplinary way, leading to the development of a new and integrated discipline of ethnomusic therapy. The paper will consider the sources of music as therapy in the practices of traditional healers in world culture, supported by data from the presenter's field research in Kenya and Brazil. With music examples and video, the presentation will consider how interdisciplinary research investigating traditional music and healing practices conducted by music therapists, medical practitioners and ethnomusicologists can lead to new kinds of information not obtainable from those disciplines independently. The presenter will support the viability of the proposed new discipline of ethnomusic therapy and provide directions for new theory of music therapy that may have applicability on a cross-cultural basis.
