Abstract: Psychoanalytically oriented music therapy must operate differently in a psychiatric department obliged to provide care than it does in a private practice or a specialized clinic. Interdisciplinary experiences--particularly with reference to the significance of pressure for change, transference and counter-transference--and therapeutic abstinence, are described with reference to theoretical classification and pragmatic integration into the clinic situation. Relationship-centered music therapy thus finds a niche in the field of acute psychiatric treatment as an offer of new experience involving a nonobligatory option for change. (author)
