Applications of Music in Medicine

Abstract: A description of the uses of music in the following areas will be presented; psychoneuroimmunology, stress reduction, pain management, surgery, general hospital and labour and delivery. Emphasis will be on the research findings and specific music therapy clinical techniques used in each of these areas, such as: toning, entrainment, biofeedback, audio-anbalgesia, systematic desinsitization, relaxation strategies, imagery, visualization, vibroacoustics, etc. A brief theoretical model will also be presented and recommendations given for selecting music for use in medical settings. Future possibilities for the applications of music in medicine, including performing arts medicine, will be provided. This paper will be published by the BSMT later in 1992, price on application.
