And there are those who have the truth within them but they tell it not in words. K. Gilbran. |
Abstract: In this paper, I will describe and contrast two moments, taken from a year's individual music therapy, with two children presenting with communication and behavioural difficulties. I will be looking at how each child interacts and at the particular way in which they have chosen to relate to me, to music, and to the instruments. I will talk about what happens within the context of three ideas central to Winnicott's thinking. These are: l. Holding i.e. mother as the first environment providing emotional and physical holding. 2. Play - play as a means of translating thoughts and feelings into a vocabulary of external action. 3. Transitional Object - i.e. the use of an object to bridge the path to separating from the original object i.e. mother. Winnicott's belief is that there is a developmental process in the emotional life of a child, which, if interrupted, can lead to later disturbance. Two video examples vividly illustrated how the child used the muscial environment to express something of their difficulties. This paper will be published by the BSMT late in l992, price on application.
