Towards an improvisational model of music therapy

Abstract: Music Therapy research, until recently, has focussed itself upon posing the question 'does music therapy work?' endeavouring to validate this through strict psychological and behavioural indices. The aim of this paper is to look concurrently at the question 'How does music therapy work?' through the analysis of the musical processes involved within therapeutic improvisation. The paper will focus initially on the analytic methodology constructed for my ensuing PhD research project, leading to the main presentation which will concentrate on a simpler model of analysis that could be used by practising music therapists. In conclusion it is hoped to show that through detailed investigation of the musical processes contained within therapeutic improvisation much may be discovered about both the therapeutic process and about music within improvisation.
