Abstract: Describes the use of art in psychotherapy, in which pictures are observed on an elemental level and a symbolic level. In addition to interpreting the pictorial elements and the tension, opposition, and balance of a picture, the art therapist must conduct a deeper interpretation that involves information indirectly related to a picture (the ability to understand a picture, the ability to self-reflect, the ability to observe situational factors present during the therapy session, the ability to control and observe communication in the therapeutic setting, and knowledge of art history and technique). Setting a goal for art interpretation and its critical evaluation are central to the outcome of therapy. (English abstract)
