Abstract: Discusses the process of mourning for lost life opportunities and unfulfilled aims, and examines the relationship between this mourning process and various depressive and functional disorders in older adults. The function of music therapy in helping older adults to come to terms with the realities of old age and at the same time to explore new possibilities for living is described and illustrated with 2 case examples. In these cases (a 76-yr-old woman and a 63-yr-old man), 2 different music therapy strategies (i.e., singing familiar folk songs and instrumental improvisation) contributed to a remission of depressive and functional symptoms.
