Abstract: Explores the relevance for art therapy of depth psychology, formalism, phenomenology, feminist criticism, Marxism, and deconstruction. The problem of conflicting interpretations and their resolution is discussed, and steps to a multidimensional interpretive strategy are outlined. Honoring the images presented by the client can best be served by incorporating 5 components of the interpretive repertoire when engaging with images. They are aesthetic attitude/phenomenology, formalism, the individual, cultural and social, and impressions of observations.
