Music therapy in the treatment of autistic children: Medico-sociological data from the Federal Republic of Germany

Abstract: Related to the theoretical research on the use of music therapy in the treatment of autistic children there was made a postal survey about the attitude towards and the application of music therapy. The data of established paediatricians and paediatric institutions in FRG show that music therapy is already accepted in the treatment of autistic children. The implications of these medico-sociological data are discussed. ABSTRACT 2: Investigated the use of music therapy in the treatment of autistic children through a postal survey about the attitude toward and the application of music therapy. Results from 191 child psychiatrists and pediatricians and 127 pediatric institutions in Germany show that music therapy is already accepted in the treatment of autistic children. It was recommended by 14.5% of pediatricians and 56.0% of psychiatrists. It was applied in no university pediatric clinics, in 11.1% of general pediatric clinics, and in 28.6% of child psychiatry institutions. Related to the theoretical research on the use of music therapy in the treatment of autistic children there was made a postal survey about the attitude towards and the application of music therapy. The data of established paediatricians and paediatric institutions in FRG show that music therapy is already accepted in the treatment of autistic children. The implications of these medico-sociological data are discussed.
