A Mega Vitamin for the Brain

Abstract: Drawing on the literature from the field of music psychology and neuropsychology, this paper will explore the current knowledge relating to how the brain processes music information. These findings will be applied to music therapy clinical practice, in particular to an understanding of music as an activating system for clients with diseases of the C.N.S. and following strokes. Various music therapy methods will be examined with regard to neuropsychological processes, including improvisation, and guided imagery and music, illustrated by clinical examples. A case will be made for a focus on music therapy as a means of activiating brain systems and the need for an understanding of brain systems included in music therapy training courses.
