Transference-countertransference in psychology integrations for music therapy in the 1970s and 1980s

Abstract: Reviews 4 proposals to integrate different psychotherapy models with music therapy. The proposals cover transactional analysis and music therapy, rational behavior therapy and music therapy, rational emotive therapy and music therapy, and GestaltQualitat and transitional objects in music therapy. The management of transference-countertransference phenomena included in these models by their creators is underscored. In addition, psychoanalytic contributions on the interpretation of music are examined. A new integration focusing on transference-countertransference, as reflected in the induced recall of music in 24 treatment dyads, is highlighted.
