Abstract: This paper discusses music therapy sessions with a 42 year old man presenting with depression and self-mutilation, much of whose life had been circumscribed by a vomit phobia. Drawing on psychodynamic theory, the therapist looks at (l) the value of the holding function as transformational space in the tripartite relationship of music therapy (2) Violence as a dynamic.
