The effect of singing instruction on the speech production of neurologically impaired persons |
Journal/Book: Journal of Music Therapy. 1992; 29: 87-102.
Abstract: Examined the effect of singing instruction upon the speech production of 8 neurologically impaired adults with expressive speech disorders. Six Ss received the singing instruction 3 times a week, 30 min a session, for 3 wks. To provide comparison, 2 controls were administered the pretest, probe sample, and posttest measures without the singing instruction. 67% of the treatment Ss made improvements in speaking fundamental frequency variability, rate of speech, and verbal intelligibility, while the 2 controls did not consistently improve in any of the speech variables. The speaking fundamental frequency of the Ss did not appear to be influenced by singing instruction.
