Communication disorders: Effect on children's ability to label music characteristics |
Journal/Book: Journal of Music Therapy. 1992; 29: 113-124.
Abstract: Developed a stimulus tape consisting of 4 short musical excerpts played loud, soft, fast, and slow. 24 preschool children (aged 3-6 yrs) attending a summer day camp for children with communication disorders comprised 1 group; the 2nd group consisted of 24 children with normal language development attending 2 preschools. Results of a 3-way ANOVA comparing the variables of group, treatment, and age indicate no significant differences due to group or age. There was, however, a significant difference due to treatment. The verbal/visual and the verbal/gesture groups were not different from one another; however, both scored significantly higher than the verbal alone group.
Note: verbal with vs without visual vs gestural cues; identification of music excerpt as loud or soft or fast or slow; 3 vs 4 vs 5 vs 6 yr olds with communication disorder; treatment implications
