The Challenge to Music Therapy of a Multi-Cultural Society |
Abstract: Because of migration and the constant influx of political refugees, many of the clients who use our Health Services come from a cultural background which differs radically from that of the therapists who seek to help them. This affects not only the language spoken but the entire cultural base, especially that of the arts, both content and meaning. A research project is currently (l99l) in progress in Sydney which seeks to test the hypothesis which follows: Without prolonged experience and exposure to the music of any given culture, it is difficult and perhaps impossible to perceive the emotional content of music from that culture. This paper will be published by the BSMT late l992, price on application.
