The inner self: Healing through an empathic mirroring response |
Journal/Book: Pratt Institute Creative Arts Therapy Review. 1992; 13: 46-51.
Abstract: Explores the issues of abandonment/loss and the need for emphatic mirroring for healing to take place within a therapeutic relationship. The case of a 6-yr-old boy, who was hospitalized as a result of uncontrollable behavior at home and in school, is presented. The S had suffered emotional losses, rejection, and abuse from his father and had developed a bad feeling about himself. To develop a healthy inner object relations system, one must experience the steps of normal development regardless of age or experience. To help his client pass through this, the art therapist learned the benefits of mirroring that require deep understanding, not simple replication of actions.
