,Abstract: Midigrid is an example of a novel approach to the design of a computer based MIDI musical instrument. As 'Midigrid' was compatible with the electronic/ digital piano in our Mobile unit, and the system, by its simplicity of operation and potential was impressive, the decision to include it was made. 'Midigrid' has extended the range of options available. For the physically handicapped the program opens up a field of musical participation. We use it less with the mentally handicapped, but are finding it especially valuable in work with highly intelligent but emotionally disturbed adolescent boys. By incorporating the music computer in improvisations combined with conventional instruments, relationships both musical and personal are fostered. The system includes a hand-held 'mouse' which allows for the playing of pre-stored notes, chords etc., which are shown on a screen in a grid of cells. A wide variety of patterns and size of grid are possible. The musician also has the choice of determining the content of a grid and operating the function of the memory facility to build up complex musical textures. Conversely, a Music Therapist can select the simplest requirement as may be needed. This paper will be published by the BSMT late l992, price on application.
